The Cumulus Cardigan
Meet the Cumulus Cardigan: soft, oversized, and my most-requested design ever. Here’s how it came together, and why I almost gave up on it twice ☁️

Behind the Pattern: The Cumulus Cardigan ☁️
If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ve definitely seen this cardigan float around.
I started designing the Cumulus Cardigan as a cozy oversized layer, something soft, ribbed, and cloud-like that you could throw over literally anything. I had a vision (and like… 1.5 skeins of yarn left from another project), and just went for it.
But this pattern took way longer than I expected. I ended up restarting the sleeves twice because I couldn’t decide between drape vs puff, and then I had to rewrite the shaping to work across sizes. The result? Something I’d actually wear every day, and that a lot of you have worn (and totally made your own).
What Makes It Different
- It's ribby and plush but still breezy.
- It works great in cotton blends, which makes it wearable all year (especially if you’re in the tropics like me).
- It’s intentionally oversized, with optional mods for cropped or extended length.
The best part? Seeing all the colorful, creative versions made by the community. Check out the Featured Creators section on the pattern page, it seriously makes my heart so full every time I update it.
If you're thinking of making your own Cumulus, go for it. Be patient with the sleeve shaping (I promise it’s worth it), and don’t be afraid to customize the fit. I included notes for that too 😉
Thanks for all the love on this one! I’m so glad it’s become a staple for many of you. Let me know if you’d want a Cumulus 2.0 someday 👀
